For a real work of art to emerge from a commission, it is vital to work together with clients and sitters to produce something really special. This requires time and patience and sometimes the ability to think outside the box. In my experience, nearly everyone has a pre-conceived idea about how they want to look - hence the importance of commissioning an artist whose work you like in the first place!
I work "live" from sketches but very rarely photos as these can be very misleading, the sketches and preliminary work are always available for comment, but it is important to remember that the creative process is extremely personal and that the first roughs are exactly that.
The sitter is NOT required to sit like a rock the whole time and I encourage people to have lots of short breaks. For dog portraits, it is very important that the owner is around to hold the biscuit and the dog, if necessary.
